Florida Gov. DeSantis Visiting Texas Border. Expert Explains the Significance.
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida will be visiting Texas Saturday. Lone Star State Governor Greg Abbott will host him in Del Rio, Texas for a border security briefing
The US-Mexico border near Reynosa in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas on a Friday has Mexican military out in full-force in anticipation of violence. It’s one of many reminders of the severity of the border crisis - yet it might not be the type of danger you’d believe it to be.
“What we see as a general trend is that crime along the border is actually lower than in most of the rest of the United States and especially in the State of Texas. Illegal immigrants are much less likely to be either arrested or convicted of state-level crimes," says Alex Nowrasteh of CATO Institute.
With border issues remaining very important in the national conversation, Is it important for Governor DeSantis and Governor Abbott to meet and discuss it publicly, showing their unity?
“The governors, by going down to the border, want to highlight a lot of the chaos that is occurring during the Biden administration, that’s absolutely true. And I think it probably will force the Biden administration to respond more forcefully to some of these issues," he explains.
Governor DeSantis has already deployed Florida law enforcement to the Texas border to assist in border security efforts. But Nowrastuh believes this is also a good chance for the governor to get some good political capital as well.
“I’ve never seen a politician, either a Democrat or a Republican, go down to the border in a serious way in order to talk about the real issues that are going on down there. It’s entirely a photo-op. Now I have no doubt that Governor DeSantis and Governor Abbott care very deeply about what is going on. But what they can do is what they’re already doing, which is deploying more resources to aid Border Patrol on the border. That does not require the governors themselves to go down to the border," he tells us.
He adds scoring political points is just a part of politics.
