More Deaths, Eye Injuries Linked to Tainted Eyedrops
WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — U.S. officials are reporting two more deaths and additional cases of vision loss linked to eyedrops found to be tainted with a drug-resistant bacteria.
The eyedrops from EzriCare and Delsam Phama, which are manufactured by Global Pharma Healthcare in India, were recalled in February. Health authorities are continuing to track infections related to the outbreak, and the Centers for Disease Control has now identified 68 cases in 16 states.
Those patients include three people who have died, eight who have lost their vision, and four others who required eye surgery because of the infection.
The bacteria found in the eyedrops — Pseudomonas aeruginosa — is commonly linked to outbreaks in hospitals. It can spread through contaminated hands or medical equipment; and is known to be resistant to standard antibiotics.
