The Cadillac Farmers Market is coming back, but possibly with some changes.

This past week, the City of Cadillac informed the Farmers Market would have a change in their parking and overall area use.

Mary Galvanek, who owns the organization, told us that the City is cutting down parking space by 40%

Mary adds that they have 60 vendors signed up already and they must now eliminate 17.

The City Manager tells us that no decisions have actually been made, but the plan is to reallocate how the lot is used, with the goal of striking a balance between special activities like the Farmers Market and how they impact the adjacent property, specifically the AMVETS building and After 26 Depot Cafe.

Marcus Peccia, the City Manager told us "So what we're looking at trying to do is, is reallocate how the how the lot is used during market days. And so instead of having as a, for instance, a food trucks and overflow vendor areas out on the north side of the lot, we're going to try to see if there's a way to reasonably relocate those uses to the east side of the parking lot, which is which would be backed up behind the movie theater."

Mary tells us, however, the parking space in question is blocked off for safety reasons, as well as to bring in more foot traffic, so changing the set-up doesn't make sense.

She says "If we are not setting up out front where it is most reasonable, most safe for our community, then it also hides our event behind the building. Hiding the farmer's market is not the point of running one, so we really are giving the city a couple of choices. They can give us that parking lot back. That is the most safe thing to do for our children in this community especially, but really all citizens of Cadillac or we also have filed the appropriate paperwork to close down Cass Street."

If the Cadillac Farmer's Market is unable to keep using the space, Mary tells us that she plans to move the event to her farm.

The city of Cadillac will be sitting down with the Galvanek's organization on Monday night at 6 pm during the City Council Meeting to discuss this issue and two others, and the Farmers Market is encouraging the public to come and show their support.
