(NEWSnet) — Drugmaker Pfizer is facing a shortage of a certain form of penicillin.

The company said there is an "impending stock out situation" for select Bicillin L-A and Bicillin C-R prefilled syringes, Pfizer's brand name of injectable penicillin.

Pfizer says it could run out by the end of the month.

Bicillin is one antibiotic in a range of options that doctors can use to treat common childhood infections. Pfizer says it is not widely used in pediatrics because other options, such as amoxicillin, are preferred for kids.

They also say supplies of that could run low, but they don't expect to run out entirely.

Pfizer says it's working to increase production of Bicillin after the drug grew in the fall and winter during an amoxicillin shortage.
