A Traverse City hair salon that said it would refuse service to certain members of the LGBTQ+ community is being investigated by the city.

In a post on Facebook, Studio 8 Hair Lab wrote that people who identify as anything but and man or a woman should seek services at a pet groomer, adding that they are not welcome at the salon.

Studio 8 later contended in a post responding to a negative review that lesbians, gays, and bisexuals are welcome but that the salon cannot support trans and gender non-conforming people.

They say they will not "play the pronoun game" or cater to requests they don't see as normal.

Traverse City has had a Non-Discrimination Ordinance since 2010, prohibiting discrimination based on a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.

The City Attorney is reviewing the case.

NEWSnet reached out to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, as recent updates to the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act offer similar protections to the ordinance.

They tell us they have received eight complaints so far but would not say whether an investigation is being launched on their part.

We also spoke with the Attorney General's Office.

Press Secretary Danny Wimmer tells us they are aware of the salon’s intent to discriminate and have received several complaints regarding the "bigotry."

They also tell us the Attorney General finds the comments to be hateful and reprehensible.

As for whether the salon has violated the law, Wimmer notes that is likely to be litigated in the aftermath of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling involving a Colorado web designer who wanted to refuse services to same-sex couples.

In that case, the court found businesses can refuse services based on their views when it pertains to expressive actions, which hair styling may fall under.

Meanwhile, a supplier of hair products used by Studio 8, Jack Winn Pro, announced Monday they are cutting ties with the salon saying they stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
