Hawaii Becomes Most Expensive State to Live
(NEWSnet) — Americans worry about their finances from New York to New Orleans, Des Moines to Denver.
It’s evident because credit card debt hit record highs last month. Collectively, Americans owe more than $1 trillion to credit card companies.
Some locales feel the burn more than others.
According to a new report from Doxoinsights, if you live in Hawaii, California, New Jersey, Massachusetts or Maryland, you’re probably getting hit the hardest. The survey assessed the overall cost of living. That’s your mortgage, rent, groceries, and power bills.
Hawaiians pay 50% higher than the national average. That makes up 43% of the average household income going straight into those expenses.
California is still expensive but nowhere near as harsh. Residents spend 12% less than their Hawaiian counterparts.
When it comes to home rentals, the numbers are a bit different.
According to Zumper data, rates are still on the upswing in places like Jersey City, that’s on a year-over-year basis for one bedroom, the same increase in Durham, North Carolina—cities like Raleigh, Anchorage, Lexington, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Albuquerque.
The cheapest place to live, according to Doxoinsights, is West Virginia. Residents pay more than 25% less than the national average. That’s followed by Mississippi, where residents pay 21% below the national average.
While both states pay significantly less for daily expenses, that’s still not going as far. Mississippi has the highest poverty rate of any state at almost 19%. West Virginia is number three with a poverty rate of 15%.
