Wisconsin Officials Trying Again to Map Out Legislative District Maps

MADISON, Wis. (NEWSnet/AP) — Wisconsin Republicans were scrambling Wednesday to come up with new legislative district maps that would prevent the state Supreme Court from creating its own version.
The court last month tossed the current Republican-drawn maps as unconstitutional. It also said it would draw new maps unless the Legislature and Democratic Gov. Tony Evers came to an agreement first.
The political stakes are huge for both parties in the presidential battleground state, where Republicans have built majorities in the Legislature under maps first drawn in 2011; but Democrats have won recent statewide elections.
In the meantime, Feb. 1 is the deadline for consultants hired by the Wisconsin Supreme Court to submit their recommendations for new boundary lines. They were reviewing six maps and could recommend one of those options, or their own.
The new maps would be in place for November's election, when every Assembly seat and half of the Senate seats will be up for grabs.
