(NEWSnet) – NASA has reported two strong solar flares that peaked within a few hours of each other Wednesday night into early Thursday.

One of the flares peaked at 6:07 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday; the other at 1:32 a.m. Eastern time Thursday, according to the announcement.

NASA also recorded a solar flare on Feb. 16.

NASA says solar flares and eruptions “can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.”

While there were widespread cell phone interruptions starting about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, impacting AT&T and other customers, no reason has been given for those outages.
