WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — The president’s annual State of the Union speech is one of the biggest scenes of American political theater.

The basics are a requirement in the U.S. Constitution that directs the president to “give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”

In modern times, it has become a prime-time televised presentation where even the details such as special guest invitations and cabinet member attendance are noticed and discussed amid the policy plans and other presidential statements.

This year’s speech takes place 9 p.m. Thursday in the House Chamber, after Speaker Mike Johnson issued a formal invitation to President Joe Biden for the presentation.

All major broadcast networks will carry the State of the Union address. Livestream options will include the White House website.

The opposing party traditionally gives its own speech after the president’s speech. Republicans have chosen Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama to give those remarks.

This will be the first State of the Union for which Mike Johnson is House Speaker.
