Congress Has a Budget Deal; But Time to Avoid Shutdown is Tight
WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — President Joe Biden and congressional leaders announced Tuesday that they have reached an agreement on this year's final set of spending bills.
“We have come to an agreement with Congressional leaders on a path forward for the remaining full-year funding bills,” Biden, a Democrat, said in a statement Tuesday morning. “The House and Senate are now working to finalize a package that can quickly be brought to the floor, and I will sign it immediately.”

The question now is how fast lawmakers can work through their procedures and get the bills passed before a partial government shutdown takes effect over the latest deadline for funding authorization.
Time is already running short. Here's what to :
- Legislative staff needs to finish writing the bill text. Documents will possibly be ready Tuesday night.
- The House has a rule that lawmakers get 72 hours to review a bill before voting.
- With a Tuesday night release, that puts the bill into Friday night for a House vote.
- After a House vote, the bill would go to the Senate.
- Senators would need to formally agree to speed up their approval process before voting on the package.
- Funding for the agencies in this package expires at midnight Friday.
