SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (NEWSnet/AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard is calling off a search for a missing U.S. Marine last seen swimming off Puerto Rico’s northeast coast on Wednesday.

Officials identified him as 26-year-old Samuel Wanjiru from Massachusetts and said he was visiting the island with his family while on vacation.

Investigators believe he was swept out to sea by strong rip currents.

Two weeks earlier, a National Guard staff sergeant drowned while trying to save a swimmer who had gotten caught up in a rip tide.
