JERUSALEM (NEWSnet/AP) — Israel’s military says Iran has launched several drones toward Israel.

It’s the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel.

Condemnation was swift. France said Iran “crossed a new threshold with regard to its destabilizing activities and is risking a potential military escalation.”  Britain called the attack “reckless.”

There was no immediate word from authorities on whether the explosions were an incoming attack or interception by air defense.

Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said there were no reports of casualties.

Israel has been on heightened alert since an airstrike last week killed two Iranian generals in Syria.

Earlier Saturday, Israel’s military canceled school and limited public gatherings to no more than 1,000 people, as a safety precaution.

U.S. President Joe Biden returned to the White House on Saturday to meet with his national security team and monitor the situation in the Middle East.
