(NEWSnet) – Medication drop-off events will take place across the country Saturday as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

This is the 26th year for the event, which is aimed at explaining to the public how best to dispose of expired or leftover prescription medications and providing a way to do so. This campaign takes place twice a year with special drop-off sites; and is in addition to nearly 17,000 permanent drug drop-off boxes that are available across the country.

Thousands of pounds of medications are collected each year, through the efforts of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Administration and its partners including local police departments.

“According to a report published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a majority of people who use prescription medication for a nonmedical purpose obtained that medication from a family member or friend,” the DEA said.
