Liberty Twp. Clean Up Encourages Residents to Clean Up Environment
Every year in Liberty Township, and many other areas around Michigan, residents will gather up trash any bring it in to be hauled off to either a scrap yard, or the landfill.
The Clean Up Day is solely for residents of the Township, so residents in our townships or county's can not bring their trash.
"What we do every year and they've done it for approximately 35 years, is people go out and you're out hiking and you find trash. Unfortunately, people trash the joint and volunteers throughout the year gather what they find and they bring it here so that we can dispose of it properly. We have a scraper that comes every year and we've also had people that come and like take refrigerant out of refrigerators and basically we're cleaning the environment. "
Items such as old furniture, mattresses, and refrigerators, are accepted, however, they do not accept hazardous items, tires, or household garbage.
These items are hauled by the township, but scrap metal is taken by a volunteer.
This is not just a service done by Liberty Township, many other areas of Michigan take part too.
"So there are a lot of cleanups going right now everybody. City of Manton, I believe city of Cadillac. They take toxic waste and they post it very prevalently when they are doing their tires, clean up and stuff like that. Unfortunately, we can't take tires, but they're very well posted, so they're all over. Everybody's doing that. And it's a great time of year, a great day for."
And while they can not speak for everyone, Beverly Monroe tells us the goal is to keep the land clean.
"We provide this as a service to the township residents in hopes that we'll keep things cleaned up and encourage them to do the same rest of the year."
