(NEWSnet/AP) — Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister and others have confirmed dead at the site of a helicopter crash in a foggy, mountainous region of the country’s northwest, state media reported.

Raisi was 63.

State TV gave no immediate cause for the crash in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

With Raisi were Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province and other officials and bodyguards, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Mohammad Mokhber, 68, was appointed acting president by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday after the crashed helicopter was found. He was previously first vice president.

Mokhber then appointed the country’s nuclear negotiator as the Foreign Ministry caretaker as Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian was also among those killed, state TV reported.

Iran’s Cabinet held an emergency meeting after the death was announced.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has announced five days of mourning over the fatal accident.

A number of world leaders also have voiced their condolences, including those from the European Union, China and Russia.

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati declared three days of mourning in the country in response to the death of the Iranian president, with flags at official institutions to be flown at half-staff.
