WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — President Joe Biden has given Ukraine permission to use U.S. weaponry to strike inside Russia, for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv.

According to four officials who requested anonymity to discuss the matter, Biden’s directive allows for weapons to be used for counterfire purposes in the Kharkiv region.

U.S. policy does not allow use of American-provided ATACMS or long-range missiles and other munitions to strike offensively inside Russia.

Biden’s decision was first reported by Politico.

Ukraine officials, notably Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have been vocal in arguing that a U.S. policy restriction was putting forces in an untenable situation as Russia intensified attacks in the Kharkiv area.
