MI DNR Euthanize Over 31,000 Atlantic Salmon

The Michigan DNR says it euthanized over 31,000 Atlantic salmon, sick with a bacterial kidney disease.
Staff at the Harrietta State fish Hatchery in Wexford County found a antibacterial kidney disease present in the fish back in early April.
Also called BKD, it's known to cause mortality in trout and salmon. It's believed to be largely responsible for the decline in Great Lakes Chinook salmon populations in the mid-880s.
A 28-day antibiotic was completed May 17th for the fish, but the treatment was not fully effective, and the disease is still testing as present.
The DNR noted that other hatcheries in Michigan, such as the Platte River State Hatchery just west of Traverse City, is reporting healthy Atlantic salmon.
