Nebraska Funeral Home Realized Woman Was Alive, Hours After Being Declared Dead

OMAHA, Neb. (NEWSnet/AP) — A Nebraska funeral home discovered that a 74-year-old hospice patient was alive, after being declared dead two hours earlier.
Workers started CPR and she was rushed to a Lincoln hospital, where she died hours later.
The woman was in hospice care at The Mulberry at Waverly nursing home and was declared dead early Monday, according to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. Shortly before noon, workers at Butherus Maser & Love Funeral Home were placing her on an embalming table when they noticed she was breathing, Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said.
“I can’t imagine their shock,” Houchin said.
The sheriff’s office is investigating, but Houchin said investigators haven’t found evidence that laws were broken.
“I’m sure the nursing home and everybody’s going to be taking a look into what has happened,” Houchin said. “And I’m sure they’ll look and see if new protocols need to be made or if they were all followed.”
