WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — UNESCO warns that developments in artificial intelligence could spawn a surge in Holocaust denial.

A report published Tuesday concludes that AI could result in misleading claims about the Holocaust spreading online.

It could come either from systemic flaws or because hate groups and will use the programs to generate erroneous content.

The report was published in partnership with World Jewish Congress.

One of the biggest concerns is that AI could be used to create deepfakes of the Holocaust — realistic images or video that could be used to suggest the Holocaust didn't occur or was exaggerated.

UNESCO's report urged tech companies to establish ethical rules for the development and use of AI, to reduce the chance of unreliable information and to prevent people from harnessing the technology to incited anti-semitic violence.
