SEOUL, South Korea (NEWSnet/AP) — A nuclear-powered United States aircraft carrier arrived Saturday in South Korea for an exercise to increase military training to cope with North Korea’s threats.

Arrival of the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group in Busan came a day after South Korea summoned Russia’s ambassador. It was in protest of a pact reached between Russia President Vladimir Putin and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un.

South Korea says the deal poses a threat to its security and warned it might consider sending arms to Ukraine to help fight Russia.

The Theodore Roosevelt strike group will participate in a training exercise beginning sometime this month.

South Korea’s navy said arrival of the carrier demonstrates the strong defense posture of allies and “stern willingness to respond to advancing North Korean threats.”
