Millions Prepare for More Sweltering Heat
(NEWSnet/AP) — Millions of U.S. residents on Sunday prepared to sweat through another scorching day.
Floodwater inundated parts of the Midwest, including northwest Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On Saturday, Rock Valley, Iowa, was evacuated after being submerged to rooftops.
Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster for 21 counties in northern Iowa, including Sioux County, which includes Rock Valley.
In South Dakota, Gov. Kristi Noem declared an emergency after the southeastern part of the state received heavy rainfall.
In California, daily high in the state’s Central Valley is expected to stay in the triple digits into Monday.
National Weather Service warned of the potential for rare tornadoes in the Northeast U.S. later Sunday.
“The greatest threat of severe weather will be across New England,” said meteorologist Marc Chenard.
In 2023, the U.S. had the most heat waves since 1936, experts said. An AP analysis of data from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that excessive heat contributed to more than 2,300 deaths, the highest in 45 years of record-keeping.
